FC Halifax 1 Vauxhall Motors 5
LEIGHTON McGivern netted a stunning hat-trick as 10-man Motors swept to a famous victory at The Shay on Saturday.
The visitors dominated from start to finish with an impressive display of fast, flowing football which left the home side – one of the pre-season favourites for promotion from the Blue Square North – chasing shadows.
The first goal came with just nine minutes in the clock when top goalscorer Josh Wilson danced through the fragile Halifax defence before being hauled down in the area. Wilson stepped up and calmly sent the keeper the wrong way for his sixth goal of the season.
Vauxhall were reduced to 10 men five minutes later when John Bennett was deemed to be the last man when he brought down Terry Dixon.
Amazingly, Motors went on to score a further four goals.
They went 2-0 up on 36 minutes when the lively Craig Mahon lashed home an unstoppable left-footed strike from 25 yards. Two minutes later, McGivern made it 3-0.
Halifax pulled a goal back early in the second half thanks to striker James Dean but McGivern quickly restored the three-goal cushion with a spectacular long-range strike. He completed his treble late on with a quickly-taken free-kick.
Vauxhall: Tynan, Taylor (Grocott 89), Bennett, Hannigan, Jones, Beck, Mahon, Mannix, McGivern (Nethercote 80), Wilson (Lacey 72), Ordish. Subs: Highdale, O’Connell. Attendance: 1,265.
Motors handed debuts to two new loan signings at The Shay. Central midfielder Patrick Lacey, 18, has arrived on a month’s loan from League Two side Bradford City, while winger Michael Ordish, also 18, joins from Southport.
Motors host Workington this Saturday (3pm) and Harrogate Town next Tuesday (7.45pm).
