DAVE Peece was the spot-kick hero as Castrol Social overcame the odds to win the West Cheshire League Division One Pyke Cup final.

The goalkeeper saved a first-half penalty after the Oilmen were reduced to 10 men – and then repeated the trick in the shootout after 120 minutes of football failed to separate the sides at Rivacre Park on Thursday night.

Castrol went ahead early on through Sean Keevey, but their hopes of causing a showpiece surprise were seemingly dashed when Nick Chambers was sent-off on the half hour for a handball on the line.

Peece kept out the resulting spot-kick, though, to ensure his team led at the break. And that was the way it stayed until four minutes from time when West Kirby took advantage of some poor defending to level the contest.

Worse was to follow in extra-time when the favourites scored again, but the Oilmen were not finished yet and captain marvel Jordan Brieley came up with a superb finish to make it 2-2 and send the match to penalties.

With Peece making two top-drawer stops and Brierley, Tom Bowen and Alan Schumacher converting their efforts, Castrol ran-out 3-2 winners to claim the cup for the second time in the club’s history and avenge their Cheshire Amateur Cup final defeat to the same opponents last month.
