SAILING: Paul Lennie and Pam Gott took the major honours as Winsford Flash SC staged the final open of the season on Sunday.

The first race saw Judy Armstrong from Scaling Dam SC quickly into the lead, closely followed by Winsford sailor Lennie.

By the third lap the fleet was well spread out with Armstrong drawing out a one-mark lead. As the race progressed, Lennie worked hard to cut the gap. By the last lap, as the two lead boats passed the number one mark, a change in wind allowed Lennie to take the lead, which he held for the rest of the race. Another local sailor, Stuart Halman, took third place.

It was Armstrong v Lennie throughout the day and the second race went to the Scaling Dam boat, with Halman again third.

The final race was also the decider and Lennie survived a collision with clubmate Ken Ayrton. Not Ayrton, who had to retire, but Lennie and Gott remained a length clear until a sudden change in the wind allowed him to extend the advantage.

But the Armstrongs, Judy and crewman Paul, clawed back into contention until near the finish when the home boat pulled away to victory by 30 seconds.

Halman and Innis Wilkinson were third and Winsford clubmates John Close and Judith Twambley fourth.
