NETBALL: THE success of a netball festival is expected to boost the sport as a whole throughout South Cheshire.

Scores of people took part in the Mums and Daughters Netball Festival held by Crewe and Nantwich Junior Netball Club at Coppenhall Leisure Centre.

Tournaments for females young and old were played at a fast pace and a high standard. Now borough community development officer Michelle Aspden, who helped organise the event, is hoping the day will spur more people to take up the sport.

She said: 'The festival was a complete success, with the women and girls all enjoying themselves. We hope this will become an annual event and that it has opened up many routes for participation in netball.'

Along with workshops and demonstrations, the festival included two tournaments. The first, for seven to 11-year-olds, was contested by six primary school teams. The Leighton All Stars were the winners.

Eight teams featuring women and girls aged 11 and over met in competition. Leighton Ladies and Fast Match met in the final, and again it was the Leighton side which took the honours.

Crewe and Nantwich Junior Netball Club meet at Coppenhall Leisure Centre between 4.30-5.30pm on Sundays. Nantwich Primary Netball Club meets at Malbank School between 5-6pm on Tuesdays. For information, contact Miss Aspden on 01270 537309.
