HOCKEY: A FORMER Chester student has been selected for the senior England team to play four matches in South Africa next month.

James Fair, a product of Deeside Ramblers' youth teams and a former King's School pupil, leaves with the rest of the squad on January 8 - his 24th birthday.

Although he has played in goal for England in friendlies before, the four matches against South Africa in Pretoria will be his first competitive outings.

He has been a regular choice for English League champions Cannock for some time and although his family live in Pulford he settled in the West Midlands after graduating from Birmingham University.

He is virtually a full-time hockey player and spends some time coaching at Bromsgrove School.

James said: 'I am hoping I do well enough to establish myself in the England team which could lead to selection for Great Britain in the buildup to the Olympic Games in China in 2008.'
