VOLLEYBALL: Chester and Ellesmere Port Eels experienced mixed fortunes on their debut in the men's National League Division Three.
They lost 3-1 with Nottingham Rockets but bounced back with a 3-2 victory over host club City of Preston.
Against Nottingham, a close opening set saw the Eels squander a significant lead to lose 28-26.
They put the disappointment behind them to take the second set 25-21 but lost the third 25-12.
The Eels - missing three players due to work commitments and injury - stopped the slide during the first half of the fourth set, only to lose it 25-18.
Eels' man of the match was Paul Blackburn, with Stuart Carvell impressing on his debut.
The Eels started poorly against Preston, losing the first two sets 25-18.
A switch of setters with Ian Hughes returning to the fray helped to turn things around as the Eels' hitters, in particular star man Anthony Howarth and Stuart Carvell, started to score freely.
Winning the third set 25-22, the Eels put Preston on the back foot and claimed the fourth 25-16.
The Eels held their nerve in the decider, winning 15-10. nThis weekend sees the men's first team in action at Birmingham and Milton Keynes. On Sunday, the club's women play at Nottingham against the home side and Tees Valley.
The Eels' junior training sessions for nine-12 year olds are up and running at Whitby High School in Ellesmere Port on Thursdays from 5-6pm. For further details see www.eelsvolleyball.co.uk
