SWIMMING: JOANNA Waterman and Lydia Woodward both qualified for the British National Finals in August at the Macclesfield pool on Saturday.

They will make up a Winsford ASC quartet at Sheffield, Abbie Henderson and James Cowburn having already qualified.

Lydia achieved her national qualifying time in the 100m freestyle, while Joanna, whose family moved to Middlewich from Essex in September, qualified in the 200m breaststroke, at the final Cheshire Championships gala.

County records were set by Abbie Henderson (100m individual medley, 400m and 800m freestyle), George White (100 IM), Lucie Tetley (200m IM), James Cowburn (100m, 200m back) and Joanna Waterman (100m, 200m breaststroke).

Abbie Henderson won a total of eight trophies at junior and senior level and Winsford swimmers accumulated over 30 gold medals, including all the swimmers already mentioned, four for 14-year-old George White and a 13-years' backstroke success for Katherine Edgar.

Silver medals were won by Joanna Waterman, Lucie Tetley, Michael Almond, Lydia Woodward, Hannah Allen, George White and James Cowburn, Emma Almond, and bronze by Suzanne Harrison, Katherine Edgar, Michael Almond, George White, Emma Almond, Ashley Walton, Abbie Henderson and Alex Hay.

The Cheshire relay champion-ships are at Stockport on Saturday. nTerry Cowburn swam his 100m backstroke event in a girl's costume to raise sponsorship money for a school trip to South America where he will be assisting in projects helping local children.
