A CHESTER Canoe Club duo have been chosen to represent Great Britain at the World Cup.
Dave Bradburn and Colin Cartwright will warm up with the European Championships in Bosnia next month before travelling to take part in six World Cup Series races in Austria, Italy and the Czech Republic in June.
The fledgling team, who only formed late last summer, earned the right to represent the nation after topping the British Wild Water Racing (WWR) Championship at the end of March.
Earlier in the month, they had competed in the Scottish and BCU WWR Championships where, on the River Tay at Thistlebrig, they won the Classic race, beating the current British C2 champions by five seconds over the 4km course.
Then at Grandtully, the duo finished a close second, just four seconds behind the champions.
The last weekend in March saw them race on the River Washburn, near Harrogate, in the GB team selection races.
In the close-run Classic race over 3.5km, Dave and Colin finished just 2.8 seconds behind champions Simon Wright and Jamie Christie with fellow Chester Canoe Club paddlers Colin Smith and Brian McNulty in third. Dave and Colin's performances were sufficient for them to retain their lead in the British WWR Championship and earn them their international call-up.
During this month and the next, the pair will split their time between intensive daily training sessions on the Dee and GB WWR training camps at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham.
Dave and Colin are still seeking a main sponsor before they race in Europe. Anyone interested in supporting the promising pair can contact them on 01244 373959 or 07841678041.
