MOTOR SPORT: The North West has some of the healthiest club racing grids in the country - and two of its top championships will be in action at Oulton Park tomorrow courtesy of the British Racing and Sports Car Club.

Along with the Opal Telecom North West Formula Ford 1600 Championship, which has become so large it has to be split into two races, the Ford XR Challenge always attracts good grids of competitors across the region. Three Scottish championships will also come south of the border and race on the same bill as the BRSCC Jedi Challenge.

The BRSCC Jedi Challenge will be the first race of the day and is made up of two classes, one for 600cc machines and one for cars up to a litre.

Next up will be the first of two Formula Ford 1600 races, with the first being for cars built after 1989.

Numerous drivers from the region will be in action in Formula Ford, including Colin Nield from Frodsham.

After the first of the FF1600 races comes the Ford XR Challenge, which races mainly in the North West due to the fact that many of its competitors are from the region. Chester's Mark Robinson is one of the usual pacesetters, with Wirral driver Mike Wright, Kingsley's Richard Dobson and Cheadle's Steven Rowles also competing.

The second FF1600 race is another filled with Cheshire drivers, with Bramhall's Rowan Arnold campaigning a Van Diemen RF85 and both Macclesfield's Steve Nixon and Wilmslow's Mike Mullins in RF86s.

The three Scottish races add extra variety to the meeting with competition for Mini Coopers, Caterhams, Porsches, TVRs, and a race for Fiesta XR2s.

Tickets cost £12 per day, with children aged 12 and under admitted free. Qualifying is set to start at 8.45am tomorrow, with the first race starting at 12.55pm. Parking and paddock access is free.
