ATHLETICS: ELLESMERE Port pupils scored top marks at the weekend in the Cheshire County Schools' Track and Field Championships staged at Macclesfield, with the town bagging two gold medals.

Scottish hurdling champion and Pi -oneer Male Sports Personality of the Year Craig France continued his impressive season by adding the senior boys' 110m hurdles title to his collection.

The Whitby High pupil struck gold by posting a time of 15.4 seconds and was joined by Pioneer Young Sports Personality of the Year James Callaghan, who continued his good form in the shot circle with an English Schools' standard result.

The Ellesmere Port Catholic High School pupil, who had been crowned North of England AA shot champion earlier in the month, spun the discus out to a mark of 34.97m for a comfortable success in the junior boys event.

Other borough participants included junior boys Josh Fogg who was runner-up in the 200m in 24.10, Tom Lowndes (fourth in the 1,500m in 5:17.00), Shaun Johnson (sixth in the triple jump with 10.83m) and Lee Patterson (ninth in the high jump with 1.35m).

Competing in the junior girls were Rebecca Grimes who was fourth in the 800m in 2:38.30, Kelly Money (sixth in the 1,500m in 5:53.6), Claire Fry (fourth in the discus in 19.43m) and Rebecca Grimes (fourth in the 800m).

The intermediate boys' category saw Tom Price of Neston finish fourth in the 100m in 12.0.

Meanwhile, West Cheshire AC were also in action in Macclesfield, taking part in the second round of the Cheshire Track and Field League on Sunday, and those competing did well despite the club suffering from a chronic lack of numbers.

Taking part were - Steve Crowe, Aidan Stoakley, Nick Rushton, Danielle Street, Danielle Erskine, Tom Price, Chris Rushton, Carl Van Schie, Rachel Stoakley, Trisha Jackson, Gareth Preston, James Callaghan, Matthew Kenny, Becky Grimes, Kerry Riley, Emily Done, Shone Valentine, Daisy Flynn-Piercey, Zara Hodder, Danielle Bentley and Gemma Mayled.
