BOXING: VAUXHALL Motors ABC's Paul Butler starred as his club hosted an entertaining dinner show at the Devonshire House Hotel, Liverpool, last Wednesday.

The evening, held in conjunction with The Lions Club of West Derby, also featured a further 11 contests at schoolboy, junior and senior level.

Not many opponents beat Butler twice and the 15-year-old was able to exact some revenge on Sean Macklin who controversially defeated him in the semi-finals of last season's National Schoolboy Championships, also in Liverpool, at Everton Park.

Macklin, a fellow England international from Birmingham's Heartlands ABC, went on to claim the crown but was left second best on this occasion with Butler picking up the Boxer of the Night award.

Although he started strongly and looked powerful, Macklin fell victim to Butler's superior technique and tired as the young Vauxhall man picked up the pace.

Vauxhall also had two other members in action but they were both narrowly defeated.

In a schoolboy contest, Adam Wynne's opponent, Kevin Satchell of Everton Red Triangle, finished strongly to get the win.

In the seniors, Carl McLeod, competing in just his third contest, produced a tidy display against the more experienced William Murphy of Golden Gloves.

Although it wasn't enough to get the verdict this time, the 16-year-old will have learnt a lot from the experience and have high hopes for the future.
