TWO teenage gymnasts have made it a magnificent seven for Brookfields Gym Club through their selection for this year's Special Olympics European Games in Italy.
Michael Hughes, 19, and 18-year-old Rachel Fairhurst have been selected for the September event in Rome - the highlight of their careers so far.
They join an elite group of only five other gymnasts from the Halton club to who have competed for their country.
Michael, from Castlefields in Runcorn and Rachel, from Warrington, have been chosen to represent Special Olympics Great Britain in the 16-21 age group after impressing at last year's SO National Summer Games in Glasgow.
Rachel took overall third place, also securing bronze on the asymmetric bars, while Michael won silver for his floor routine and bronze on the parallel bars.
Andy Shard, head artistic coach at the Kingsway Leisure Centre club, visited Brookfields School to break the selection news to Michael at an assembly.
College student Rachel was similarly delighted when her place in the GB team was announced at a club training session.
'Michael and Rachel have both done regional games and national games,' said Andy.
'This is the next step up for them - being selected for their country.
'It's also a massive honour for the club.' Both gymnasts will enter the all-round competition and fundraising for the trip now begins.
