WAVERTON Primary School were crowned overall champions of the Chester and District Inter-Schools Cross Country Championships.
The annual event was staged at Thomas Wedge Junior School, Saughall, for the fourth year in a row and there was a record turnout, with 14 schools sending 280 children to compete last Thursday.
Races were split into two age groups - Years 3/4 and Years 5/6. The younger runners faced a 600-metre course, while the older ones tackled one kilo-metre.
In the Y5/6 boys' race, Sam Mellor of Waverton was first, Matt Hulse of Ashton Hayes second and Ben Roycroft of Upton Heath third. In the girls race, Lydia Parry of Upton Heath was first, Darcy Tuite of Kelsall second and her sister, Gabrielle, was third.
In the Year 3/4 boys section, Ashton Hayes' Harry Stubbs won followed by William Carter of Overleigh St Mary's. Christie Richie won for Overleigh in the girls' race, with Jessica Jackson (Huntington) second and Georgia Jones (also Huntington) third.
Organiser Andrew Hetherington said: 'It was a brilliant, well-supported race. Parents and schools supported it and we had a great turnout.'
