THE latest round of the West Cheshire AC Schools Cross Country Series saw a St Saviour’s Primary pupil enhance her chances of victory.

Cora Finlay pushed herself to joint top spot overall in the Year 5 girls standings after winning Saturday’s second round race in a time of seven minutes 41 seconds. She finished ahead of second-placed Rachel Barrett (Thomas Wedge, Saughall) who posted 7:49 and Georgia Barlow (St Bernard’s, Ellesmere Port) in third with 7:59.

Runners from West Cheshire schools took part in Saturday’s meeting, which was the second in a series of four cross country runs to be staged at Stanney Oaks throughout the winter.

In the Year 5 boys race, Callum Thelwell (St Saviour’s) claimed third in 7:06 behind winner Mark Latham (Eaton Primary) and Josh Boothman (Farndon).

Stephen Jones was one of eight West Cheshire AC members in action at the Northern Athletics Indoor Open Meeting, held at Sheffield.

The under 17 youth competed against senior men in both of his 60m and 150m heats and claimed victories in times of 8.01 seconds and 18.36 seconds respectively.

Shona Valentine won her U20 ladies 150m heat in a time of 19.81 seconds, and Richard Farley finished fourth in his U17 men’s 600m in 1:35.84.

Alice Jennings cleared 1.55m for fourth place in the U15 girls high jump, clocked 9.94 seconds for second place in the 60m hurdles and posted 8.85 seconds for eighth place in her 60m.

Lucy Earl completed her U15 girls 60m hurdles in 11.55 seconds for eighth position, and Kelly Baker hit 8.02m for eighth place in the U15 girls shot and clocked 9.13 seconds for seventh place in her 60m.

Sam Galley finished third in her U17 ladies 150m in 20.19 seconds, and posted 8.53 seconds for sixth spot in her 60m.

Lewis Emmitt completed the West Cheshire AC contingent, finishing sixth in his U20 men’s 60m in 7.69 seconds.

The West Cheshire AC annual general meeting is on Friday at the Epic Leisure Centre, Ellesmere Port (7.30pm).
