THE Groves are rooted to the bottom of the Meller Braggins League after suffering an eight-wicket home defeat to Pott Shrigley in Division Three on Saturday.

Having lost the toss, winless Groves were put in to bat and were dismissed for 123.

In reply, Shrigley made light work of their task, securing a comfortable victory by easing to 124-2.

Groves travel to BowdonŠVale for their next match on Saturday.

In Division Four of the Cheshire Alliance, Capenhurst edged to a two-wicket win over Wirral 2nds.

Wirral won the toss and elected to bat, posting a score of 79 all out after collapsing from 45-3 to 47-8 before a late rally.

The wickets were spread among the Capenhurst attack, with Rob Brumby (4-25), Ian Hart (3-20) and Mike Russon (2-24) the pick of the bowlers.

Capenhurst looked set to fall short of their target in response, when they were reduced to 43-6 shortly after losing opener Steve Batty (25).

However, runs from Jack Hoppins (20) and Adam Walking (13) offered hope at 71-8.

The stage was then set for a quick-fire innings from tail-ender Mike Edge (10no), who guided the hosts over the line by the narrowest of margins as they reached 81-8.
