A TEAM of cricketers made a winning return to action – 17 years after they last played together.

The Ellesmere Port Old Boys – made up of players from the original Ellesmere Port CC team, which folded in 1995 – tasted victory in their comeback match last week.

Captain Billy Philpot and former player Nigel Lewis revived the team after deciding it would be a good idea to start playing on a regular basis again.

The ‘old boys’ were accepted into the Chester Midweek League and, after suffering a delayed start to the season due to the recent wet weather, they played their first game last week, defeating Chester Taverners in Division Seven.

“It was really good – like we’d never been away!” said Mike Caulfield, the team’s youngest player at 39 years of age.

The old club, not to be confused with the Ellesmere Port CC team currently playing in the Cheshire Alliance, played in the Flintshire Cricket League in the late 1980s before being accepted into the Cheshire Association.

They were based at Rivacre but folded in 1995 after a fire destroyed their home ground.

The revived version of the club has found a new home in Chester – at the Cheshire County Sports Club in Upton.
