NORTHWICH'S preparations for races on the River Thames were a success at the Runcorn Head of the River on Saturday.
Their crews' endurance was fully tested by a 6,000m course and they celebrated four wins, three of them in the first division.
They were the Veteran D eight of Nev Hand, Steve Wignall, Mike Pilkington, Tom Kilkenny, John Dutton, Mike Francis, Andy Simpson, Ian Silk and cox Karen Airey; the women's Junior 16 coxless quad scull of Nicola Plant, Victoria Lindholt, Sarah Patrick and Leanne Ratcliffe; the J14 coxed quad of Ellan Preece, Jody Frazer, Sarah Peck, Mhairi Macritchie and cox Martha Urban.
Northwich's first eight beat Ashcroft by a resounding 40 seconds in Division Two. Tom Carter, Jamie Leighton, Mike Rafferty, Matthew Jump, John Cowen, Tom Green, Geoff Simms, Peter Wood and cox Helen Ferber were in the boat.
At the weekend Northwich's women's squad will send their strongest eight to compete in the women's Head of the River Race in London. The crew are hoping to match their good performance last year. The juniors will also be making the trip down to 'The Tideway' to compete in the Schools' Head of the River Race.
