HOCKEY: WINNINGTON bowed to new North Two West league leaders Crewe for the third time this season on Saturday.
Facing a side unbeaten since October 29, Park were soon on the defensive and John Paul Dodd in goal pulled of a string of fine saves to keep the scores level.
Having survived Crewe's onslaught, Park began to edge themselves into the game through the pace of Dennis Topping and Peter Evans.
But they were caught on the break and Crewe edged the first half 1-0.
Soon after the restart the home side doubled their lead from a penalty corner, but Winnington hit back and the introduction of Rob Bowdon galvanised the attack.
He finished off a good right wing move from Topping and Danny Moores, but Crewe soon restored their two-goal advantage with an incisive breakaway goal.
Park scored a second - Peter Evans converting a Steve Campagnaro cross - and Leigh came close to equalising in the closing stages, but his low shot was well saved. nTitle-chasing Park 2nds did much better in their North West Five South derby, beating Crewe 3rds at home 4-0.
John Lavin, Alex Fraser, Kenny Roberts and Johnny Kettle were all on the mark and on Sunday they seemed set to continue in the same vein, storming into a 3-1 lead against Macclesfield, only to lose 4-3. Andy Whitmore, after 40 seconds, Lavin and Dave Hunt netted.
Park 3rds were also among the goal, winning 6-0 at hapless Sale 3rds. John Crouchley (2), Tim Boxall (2), Andy Cartin and Rick Evans scoring. nWinnington's Under 15s reached the England Plate quarter finals on
Sunday when they beat Northern 4-2 on penalties after the teams tied 2-2 at the end of normal time.
Debutant Pat Cook and Alistair Buckle scored early for Park, but Northern recovered and the scores were level again by half-time.
Winnington played increasingly on the counter, but neither side could make the breakthrough and it was the visitors who held their nerve in the shoot-out, Will Egglestone, Alistair Buckle, Tom Hughes and Michael Dodd all scoring.
Saturday: Park 1sts home v Bebington (2.10pm), 2nds away v Alsager; 3rds home v South Cheshire 4th (12.45pm). nHelen Jones gave Winnington Park Ladies the lead against rivals Chester and two goals from Karen Morgan ensured they won 3-2.
The 2nds also won, beating Timperley 2-0 thanks to goals from Anna Shone and Lizzie Chambers.
Cheshire League champs Park are at Wilmslow in the Cheshire Plate final on Sunday.
