ACTIVITIES at a sports club were suspended after one session due to the closure of its venue amid health concerns.

Kingsway Leisure Centre has temporarily shut after traces of legionella bacteria were found in the water supply.

Halton Basketball Club, which had its first sessions last week since relaunching, is one of the resident sports organisations in limbo while further investigations are carried out at the Widnes centre.

The club has England international Delme Herriman from Widnes as its lead coach with Sean McKie as club secretary.

Herriman has played basketball all over the world and has just signed for Leicester Riders after recent service with Chester Jets and Manchester Magic.

The Halton club was due to meet every Monday until the end of March.

The opening hour-long class for those in School Years 7 to 10 attracted a promising 18 youngsters but the ensuing one-hour session - for school Year 11 to open age - only four.

Newcomers will be welcome once the club is up and running again - initial indications were the centre would not re-open until Monday, October 9 at the earliest.

Jane Rhodes, Halton Borough Council sports development officer, said: 'In the pipeline are schools sessions, specialist camps.

'We are looking for teams to join for coaching and a mini-league and volunteer coaches to help with the club and take on specific age groups.

'With the situation at King-sway Leisure Centre, people can register with myself and I will let them know when the next session will be on.' For further information, call 0151 907 8300, ext 4058.
