TRIATHLON: MEMBERS of the City of Chester Triathlon Club have turned in impressive performances in a range of events recently.
Competing in the Austrian Iron-man at Klagenfurt - a 2.4k swim in lake Worthersee followed by a 112-mile cycle ride and 26.2-mile marathon - Nick Rose recorded an excellent 10hrs 14mins 31secs, followed by Simon Mcallister in 13:09:54.
Nick Campbell rounded off his gruelling charity challenge of the London Marathon with the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon in 13:14:56.
Not satisfied with a mere Iron-man, Tony Fisher and Rob Holmes travelled to Canada to tackle the formidable Triathlon de Levis, which featured a 7.6k swim through the St Lawrence Seaway followed by a massive 360k bike ride and a double marathon. Fisher was sixth overall in 25:29:2, while Holmes, who was warming up for his DecaIronman bid in November, was 15th in 31:3:15.
Tom Barker made his Ironman debut in Frankfurt. Starting with a 1:07 swim in Lake Waldsee, he stormed across the line after a six-hour bike and 4hr 24min marathon in 11:40:21. At 21, he is the young-est Ironman in the Club.
Nearer to home in the Nantwich Triathlon, Matt Gibbs was first over the line for Chester Tri in 1:11:14, followed by Steve Eastwood (1:16:56), Rob Edwards (1:19:37), Simon Woodward (1:21:25), Dave Whieldon (1:25:10), Dave Humphreys (1:30:51), John Shake-shaft (1:34:39), Gavin Floyd (1:35:27), Ian Johnson (1:38:10) and Lisa Gornall (1:49:32).
In Preston, Janet Frost was in the 8-80 Duathlon, an event involving a 3.3k run, 11.2kbike/run/bike/run/ bike/run. She recorded even splits to come home in 1:32:44, first lady and 14th overall.
Helen Lawrence goes from strength to strength. Her recent successes in the World Student Games Triathlon and being British duathlon champion qualifies her for the European Championships, and she will be in the elite race in the forthcoming Salford Triathlon.
Members of the junior squad have been successful in the British Triathlon Association Junior North West Winter Series, which comprises two duathlons and three aquathons. Matthew Fisher was first in the youth boys category.
James Bremner was first Tristar 1 boy, Emily Fisher second Tristar 3 girl, Matthew Kimpton second Tristar 3 boy, Patrick Strading second Tristart boy and Phil Hogg third Tristar 3 boy.
