It's been another busy week of sport in and around Chester with plenty of team and individual successes.

We've brought together all the goings on from across the sporting scene in the city and surrounding areas, including a trophy triumph for Helsby Golf Club and athletic success for West Cheshire AC.

Golf

Helsby Golf Club are toasting team success after securing glory in a major regional competition.

A team of fourteen golfers from the club emerged victorious at the Manchester District Golf Alliance (MDGA) City Glass Mens Foursomes competition.

The Helsby team took the title after beating Sale Golf Club by 4 1/2 to 2 1/2 in a tense final played at Blackburn Golf Club.

The win all hinged on a crucial match which was won on the second extra hole by Jamie Hodgkinson and Chris Stott, and was reminiscent of the final day of the Ryder Cup, with other team members plus spectators and officials following on the fairway and surrounding the green.

The Helsby team made a crucial par four on the difficult second hole to win the match and take the winning fourth point.

Helsby had won six rounds in the competition, which started in April with over 100 teams from the Alliance entering.

Swimming

A swimmer from the University of Chester has Rio and Tokyo in his sights after picking up a silver medal with his relay team, in the first ever Mediterranean Beach Games in Pescara, Italy.

Ozcan Esen, an international student studying for a Masters degree in Exercise and Nutrition, competed in the Finswimming category of the competition.

Held every four years, the Games consist of only water and beach sports, and aim to bring together young athletes of the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea.

Finswimming is an underwater sport consisting of three techniques involving swimming – apnea, surface and immersion (with an air tank) – with the use of fins on the water’s surface.

Esen, who is half Bulgarian and half Turkish, competed against swimmers from 14 other countries and, in addition to coming second with his team in the relay race, he reached the finals in the 50 metre and 100 metre races, coming sixth in each race overall.

The 29-year-old has swam for Turkish national team for 11 years and has taken part in five World and six European Championships.

Esen said: “I will honestly try to be selected to go to the Rio Olympics but I’m not confident about my chances as one year is not enough time for me to get my performance back.

“Even if I don’t go to Rio, I will keep trying and prepare for Tokyo in 2020.”

Equestrianism

Some of the world’s finest international event riders were in action at Kelsall Hill Horse Trials, where Great Britain international Piggy French dominated the field.

The open intermediate and intermediate classes at Kelsall Hill were a happy hunting ground for French, who produced a top-three finish in each of her four rides.

Local riders were out in force too with Kelsall’s own Michael Owen heading the leaderboard in BE100 Section U aboard Katherine Loughe’s Naughty Nala. He also had top-ten placings at novice level with Zoe Beresford’s Thunder VI and Jims Pal.

“Kelsall Hill is an outstanding horse trials venue,” said French.

“The cross-country courses are fantastic in design and build, whilst being spectator friendly with a great cross-country viewing.”

Organisers are already planning their spring fixture which takes place on over 22-24 April 2016.

Hockey

Deeside Ramblers travelled to Wakefield on Saturday and as a result of a 3-0 success are now third in the National League Northern Conference.

It was an impressive performance with all of the goals coming in the first-half, from Tom Fearnall, Matt Stevington and Waqas Akbar.
