For the second game in a row, Chester Romans broke the 50-point barrier as Cheshire rivals Crewe Railroaders were routed 62-0.

Romans began well with scores on both of their opening drives as offensive MVP Brad Chilvers finished off good work on the ground with short touchdown passes to Martin Cocking and Tom Morley with Andy Simpson adding a PAT to open up a 13-0 lead.

Chester’s defence had Crewe’s measure and Britball veteran Mark Cairns picked off the Railroaders quarterback to regain the ball and after some excellent weaving runs Tom Peto found the end-zone with a 27 yard scamper to make it 19-0.

The Romans were now on a roll with Chilvers connecting with a 30 yard pass to Nathan Jewkes for his first touchdown and, not wanting to be left out, the defensive unit got in on the act as linebacker Arron Powell picked off the Crewe quarterback and raced 74 yards to score for a 33-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Chester added another seven points in the second quarter as Powell claimed his second interception and, following more good work on the ground that led to a 320 yard yield at the end of the game, Ash Wainwright completed a punishing set of runs to go in for a touchdown.

Crewe found themselves under sustained pressure in the second-half with Morley taking in a short Chilvers pass for his second touchdown and outstanding work from the defence with defensive MVP Danny Cotton at the heart forced the home team into a fumble and conceding a two point safety to make it 49-0.

In the final quarter, Wainwright danced around the outside of the defence to go in from 18 yards and Chilvers hit Cocking with a perfect pass from 25 yards for the game’s final touchdown to complete the scoring.

The Romans are back in action on Sunday when Walney Terriers visit The Cheshire County Sports Club (2.30pm).
