CARL van Schie set four new personal bests in his first senior indoor heptathlon competition.

The West Cheshire AC multi-eventer posted 4,362 points at the English Athletics Senior Open and Under 20 Combined Events Championships, held in Sheffield.

Carl, a former Upton High pupil from Guilden Sutton, finished 22nd out of 38 starters and finished fifth in the list of North of England entrants competing.

He opened his account with a blistering 60m best time of 7.55 seconds, and added other best performances from the long jump (6.44m) and shot (10.07m), before ending the first day with a clearance of 1.72m in the high jump.

Carl started the second day with a new 60m hurdles best time of 9.08 seconds, and concluded with a 3.55m clearance in the pole vault and a 1,000m run of two minutes 50.6 seconds.

West Cheshire’s Mary Radford finished 69th in the combined under 17 men’s, over 70 women and over 17 ladies race at the North Wales Cross Country League fourth round held at Wrexham.

Dave Alexander was eighth in the senior men’s race, ahead of Dave Hough (125th) and Tony Thackray (170th), who was racing in his first cross country appearance.

Tessa McCormick finished strongly in the under 13 girls race at the Manchester Cross Country League held at Stockport’s Woodbank Park.

She was joined by the under 11 boys duo of Rob Rogers and Alex Kirk, while Joel Aldis and Olivia Beaney ran in the combined U13 boys/U15 girls race. James Ellis led home Danny Meadows in the U15 boys race, passing five runners and nearly a sixth until a slip on the last muddy corner 20 metres from the finish destroyed his momentum.

Louis Humphreys had a strong second lap in the under 17 men’s race, picking off four of the five runners between himself and clubmate Alec Beaney.

Fixtures this weekend include the Cheshire Schools Cross Country Championships, tomorrow, at Knights Grange, Winsford; the Northern Athletics Seniors and Under 20 Indoor Championships, at Sheffield, on tomorrow and Sunday; the Twin Piers 10k Road Race, at Colwyn Bay, tomorrow; and the Four Villages Half Marathon, from Helsby, on Sunday (11am start).

Tickets are on sale from club officials for West Cheshire AC’s annual presentation which is scheduled to take place at Chester Rugby Club, Hare Lane, Littleton, Chester, on Friday, February 1 (7.30pm start).
