CHESTER Canoeing Club starlet Jenny Swallow is celebrating becoming a national champion – four times over!

The 18-year-old won not one, not two, not three but four Under 18s girls titles at the National Sprint Championships in Nottingham.

Her most pleasing victory came in K1 500m, given her previous highest-placed finish this year was second.

Swallow also tasted success in the K2 500m and 1,000m, along with Runcorn Canoe Club’s Jenny Illidge, and the K4 1,000m, along with Illidge, Royal Canoe Club’s Sarah Beer and Wey Kayak Club’s Beth Stevens.

Swallow, Illidge, Beer and Banbury & District Canoe Club’s Laura Ferguson just missed out on glory in the K4 500m, finishing second.

Swallow now has the European Marathon Championships to look forward to.

She will team up with regular partner Illidge to tackle the junior ladies K2 at the five-day Poland event, which begins today.

The duo, who finished second in the K2 500m and 1,000m at an international sprint regatta in Germany last month, warmed up for their appearance at the championships by finishing second in the Division Four K2 race in the Pangbourne Hasler Marathon on the River Thames.

Swallow was not the only Chester member to excel at the National Sprint Championships.

Ellie Hollland, 14, combined with three other rising stars, including Runcorn’s Amy Wignall, to win the U14s girls K4 500m.

Holland, a pupil at Bishops’ High School in Great Boughton, was also part of the team that came second in the K4 1,000m.

She was also second in the K1 1,000m Final Three and sixth in the K2 1,000m along with a girl from Gibralter.

Holland’s performances at the National Water Sports Centre means she has been promoted to the girls C category for the next regatta.

Melvin Swallow, Jenny’s father, has become a national champion once again.

He won the masters Over 54s K1 1,000m.

Carlos Carmello also had reason to cheer in the men’s C category. He was second in the 200m and fourth in the 1,000m and 1,500m. Caroline Rowlands paddled with 4Wey Kayak’s Stevens to take third in the U18s girls K2 500m.
