ALVIN McDonald's Motormen have come a long way in a short time and expectation levels are such that they now leave games like this disappointed by a one-goal defeat.

Burton boast a high profile manager, four figure gates and a £7,000 wage bill but Vauxhall's performance suggested they should have taken something from last night's match.

The Motormen were stunned on four minutes when right-back Jason Kavanagh's deflected 30-yard effort screamed past the helpless Chris Holmes.

Vauxhall then dominated long periods of the first half but were unable to apply the finishing touches to get the reward they deserved for their efforts.

Burton keeper Matt Duke was quick off his line to deny Nicky Young in a one-on-one situation while Peter Cumiskey's free-kick from just outside the area struck the post.

Albion punished the Motormen for their missed chances on 41 minutes when Alan Bailey fired home at the back post from substitute Aaron Webster's right-wing cross.

Kevin Lynch should have scored early on in the second half when he latched on to Jon Stanhope's knock down, but his shot was agonisingly deflected over the bar.

Vauxhall did pull a goal back on 69 minutes when Young robbed Darren Wassall in the six-yard box, turned to face goal and blasted past Duke from close range.

Pushing for an equaliser, the Motormen's evening was best summed up in the final minute when substitute Stanhope was denied twice.

His first shot was saved by Duke only to rebound to his feet and his second effort seemed to be sailing into the net before Neil Glasser cleared it off the line.

Manager Alvin McDonald said: 'I have mixed feelings. I'm proud of the boys and I think that the best team lost, but I don't want to keep going to places where people say you're the best side to come here and we still walk away with no points.'

Vauxhall: Holmes, Rigby, Thompson, Brazier, Haddrell, Lynch, Nesbitt, Lawton, Cumiskey (McDermott 58), Young (Cullen 90), Vicary (Stanhope 45).

Attendance: 1,172.
