ORIENTEERING: DELAMERE Forest was the venue for the British Schools' Orienteering Championships 2003.

And two Northwich brothers were among the top finishers. Mike Beasant was runner-up in the Year Six (11-year-olds) group and Tom, 14, was fifth in the year nine event. They attend the Grange Junior and Grammar Schools.

More than 150 schools took part with 1,100 children competing. Organisers were delighted to welcome men's world champion Jamie Stevenson.

In winning the sprint race at the recent World Championships in Switzerland, he became the first British man to take a world title in orienteering.

Orienteering is a sport involving navigation between control points marked on a unique orienteering map.

The challenge is deciding the best route in the quickest time.

Orienteering can take place anywhere from remote forest and countryside to urban parks.

The most challenging orienteering takes place in remote areas, which have demanding terrain and fewer paths.

Outspan, Vimto, Swizzells Matlow, Bic and the Outdoor Show 2004 sponsored the weekend event.
