SEVENTY youngsters braved the frost and fog to compete in the latest West Cheshire AC Schools Cross Country Race Series at Cheshire Oaks High School, Ellesmere Port, on Sunday.

Oliver Wedgwood (Whitby Heath Primary) claimed top spot in the Year 6 boys race after being pushed all the way to the line by Sam Mellor (Waverton) in the closest race of the series.

James Realff (Farndon) won the Year 5 boys race ahead of runner-up Toby Ryan and Sebastian Dunn (both Waverton), who finished second and third respectively.

Jessica Graham (Farndon) won the Year 5 girls race, ahead of second-placed Zoe Deponeo (Upton Heath), while Alex White (Neston) won the Year 6 girls event ahead of Emma Pyatt (St Luke's, Frodsham) and Ellen Collins (Our Lady's, Ellesmere Port) who were second and third.

Joseph O'Riordan and Joe Lion (both Neston) finished first and second in the Year 7 boys race, while Michael Stewart (Wirral Grammar) won the Year 8 boys race, and Amy Collins won the Year 8 girls gold medal.
