THERE was a nailbiting finish to the Captain's Prize at Runcorn with the top two golfers finishing level on nett scores.

Both totalled 138 but after a card play-off, the trophy went to nine-handicapper Mark Bradburn with scores of 72 and 66 from John Hickey, who had two rounds of 69 playing off 14.

The best gross total was by Paul Ryan (5) with 151 (74+77).

The competition was held over two weekends.

Mike Lane (24) carded the best first-round score of 24 and John Culshaw, off six, enjoyed the best second round of 67.

Winners of the mixed foursomes were Sheila Horswill and Ian Baggaley with a score of 70.5 from second-placed Nora Callaghan and Keith Phillips on 72.5.

The two-club competition saw victory for Jacquie Spencer and Alan Miller with 35 - one better than Gwenan Williams and Ian Bagg aley.

Jack Burbidge, 18, played a superb round to break the course record for a junior - as winner of the Junior Shield.

He scored 66-7=59 to edge out Jack Wignall 85-25=60.

The captain's weekend, incorporating the final round, opened with Friday-night entertainment from Annie's Saints and Sinners Jazz Band.

Following the decisive second round, the Saturday evening presentations saw captain Graham Peattie and wife Andrea hand out prizes.

A family day on Sunday was well-attended by members, relatives and friends with a barbecue and disco adding the final touch to what had been an outstanding and enjoyable weekend.
