A RAID on Denmark by Vauxhall Motors ABC saw the club pillage gold and silver from their hosts in the Hvidovre Box Cup.

Senior coach Peter Phelan and coaches Jamie McHugh, Mike Phillips, Lee Holmes and Dave Leatt took a team of 10 schoolboy and junior boxers to take part in the competition, thanks in part to sponsorship of the trip from Dave Jones, owner of Ellesmere Port-based Oil Gas Safe UK.

Billeted 10 miles outside Danish capital Copenhagen, Motors claimed five gold medals and two silver during two days of boxing .

The competition did not start well, though, as Jay Holmes was out-pointed by Ramazan Karahan of Braband Box Klub in the 36kg class on the Saturday.

Connor Leatt got things on track, however, with a points victory over Frederik Rex Hansen of Pandrup BK in the 40kg.

The following day he did the same to Oscar Heggen of Foruland ASKM BK to seal gold for Motors.

James Delaney then fell foul of the judges having built up a commanding lead. In the third round against Loaay Souki of Korsor BK the referee ejected him for slapping after two earlier public warnings.

Jordan Pleavin kept it clean, however, as he demolished Vajle BK’s Hanudi Ayade forcing a second-round stoppage at 48kgs.

On Sunday, he emerged triumphant with a points victory over Matthias Hansen of Kobe BK.

An up-and-down qualification round continued for Motors however as Jack Kelly lost on points to Nader Fitian of Swedish club SIK Fight.

But an injured hand saw Fitian withdraw, allowing Kelly to replace him in the 51kg final.

He couldn’t turn around his fortunes, though, as Aarhus’ Omar Mohammed defeated him to leave him with silver.

A slugfest between Leroy Hendricks of Muscle Fit, Germany, and Jake Batchelor at 60kg saw the Motors boy narrowly lose a points decision.

Connor Steen was matched with Ahmad Ibrahim of Braband BK in a contest between strategy and showboating.

Despite the flair of switch-hitter Ibrahim, Steen stuck to his plan and boxed his own fight to secure a well-earned victory at 64kg but he was robbed of his final bout after opponent Daniel F Sorensen withdrew, meaning he received the gold via walkover.

In the straight finals Kyle Timson tackled Dondrup’s Nikolas Bruun, the Port fighter claiming a gold at 36kg and Ethan Bibby followed suit, outpointing Ronni Juul Rasmussen of Haslef Zealand at 40kg.

The last bout saw Ramazan Karahan complete a double over Motors’ fighters when he beat Tom Lloyd on points in the 36kg final.

As his clubmates were plundering Viking gold, Alex Foulkes was finishing what he started earlier this season as he travelled to Speke to face Gemini ABC’s Andy Toohey.

Last time out Toohey was pulled for a cut as Foulkes dominated at 53kg and in the return the Motors fighter looked even better.

Wise to his rival’s eagerness to clinch, Foulkes adapted to punch his way out of close-contact situations and score points while doing it as the Motors fighter walked away with a well-earned but comfortable victory.
