VAUXHALL Motors ABC’s Paul Butler will be compared side by side with the top-ranked fighter in his weight division next week as England take on the cream of France, Sweden, India and Kazakhstan.

The friendly training camp and tournament at Sheffield will be used as a warm-up for the forthcoming European zone Olympic qualifier in Pescara, Italy, which begins on February 24.

The England coaching team have selected 14 potential Olympic prospects to run the rule over.

This will be the first time that Butler, who has done most of his fighting for England at 51kg, and Darren Langley, the man rated the top of Butler’s natural 48kg category, have been viewed side-by-side.

The Great Sutton fighter has already spoken of his desire to knock Langley from his perch and, although the pair will not fight each other, the coaches will get to compare Langley’s experience with Butler’s confident unflappable style.

Meanwhile, the Vauxhall club has another star making waves. Mason Cartwright won the West Lancs and Cheshire NACYP 52kg final when he took on Rotunda’s Thomas Buchanan.

Clever training enabled Cartwright, who was not fancied in this bout, to pick out Buchanan’s dropped left hand after each jab and he exploited the gap with repeated right crosses to the head.

Every Buchanan punch was cheered by the crowd at Liverpool’s Dockers Club, but Cartwright more than matched him and by the second was hurting his opponent.

By the end, Cartwright had silenced the crowd and demonstrated his championship potential.

Fellow Motors fighter Tom Shiels could not see his way past Liam Milner in the 60kg semi-finals, however.

One year ago Shiels met the St Aloysios ABC fighter and won a brutal battle by a narrow points margin.

This time Milner was vastly improved and, although Shiels’ punches had a significant impact on his opponent, he didn’t throw enough and Milner, now equipped with greater speed and power, picked him off.

Shiels went for the stoppage in the final round and won the round on points but it was not enough.
