Heavyweight prospect Andy Jones is keen to continue learning the ropes as he prepares for his second professional contest.

Jones, 30, will take part in a four-rounder in Manchester on Saturday night having defeated tough veteran Moses Matovu in his debut

"I’m feeling really good,” said Jones, who enjoyed a successful amateur career with Saltney-based Deva Police ABC.

"We’ve changed a few things and we’ll find out if the changes have worked on Saturday night.

"My trainer Shane Thomas has been in the gym with me all hours and that’s been a massive help."

Jones, who lives in Mynydd Isa, had some difficult moments against Ugandan journeyman Matovu but believes he will come massively for the experience.

"After the fight I was a bit critical but looking back I don't think it was too bad a performance," he said.

"I have taken the positives from it and been working on a few negatives. I want to start faster and get that first round in the bag and then build on that.

"I have been building up my running too and working on different punch combinations."

Although his opponent for Saturday has still to be confirmed, Jones is happy to leave that to his trainer and promoter Dave Coldwell.

He said: “I spoke to Dave and he’s got someone lined up. He knows what he’s doing and he puts on 50-50 fights so I know it will be tough but winnable.

“That’s exactly what I need and it’s all part of the learning curve.”

Jones has been sparring with training partner Tom Doran and a heavyweight from Bulgaria who is now based in Deeside.

He credits trainer Thomas and sponsors Probody Fitness Buckley, KB Oil Environmental and Pentahotel Warrington with helping him rediscover his passion for boxing.

"I got a bit disillusioned with the sport and that's why I went away from it," he said.

"But I'm really enjoying it again and Shane has been unbelievable. He's in the gym at 5am with some lads and then he'll go away and come back at night."
