CHESTER is home to a world champion!

Chris Goodwin secured his third and most distinguished title yet when he won the vacant World Boxing Foundation lightweight strap last Friday.

The 23-year-old, who trains at Chester Boxers in Hoole, claimed the crown after recording a unanimous points victory over Istvan Kiss at the Royal Theatre, Castlebar, County Mayo.

Roared on by an appreciative Irish crowd, Goodwin controlled the fight from the off and rammed home his advantage in the final stages of the bout after a bizarre 10th-round incident.

The Cestrian, who earlier in his career won the International Masters lightweight and welterweight belts, landed a heavy body blow on his Hungarian opponent.

Kiss immediately spat out his gum shield and proceeded to vomit in the middle of the ring.

The reigning Universal Boxing Organisation Youth lightweight champion was then sick again in his corner.

However the referee allowed the fight to continue after Kiss was given the all clear by his coaches.

Goodwin remained focused throughout the episode and continued to pile the woe on the stricken southpaw as he took his impressive record to 16 wins from 19 professional outings.

Goodwin, who prepared for the fight by sparring with WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns, is now taking a well deserved break.

But his promoters Fight Options are already planning his next step.

Goodwin’s dad and trainer Steve said: “The lad he was fighting was strong, he could really punch, but if you’re fighting for titles you’re going to fight decent lads.

“But Chris boxed brilliantly for the full 12 rounds.”
