THERE was a fantastic day of bowling at Hoole Park Bowling Club on Saturday as almost 80 players entered the historic Sir Owen Phillips Cup.

The competition, which has been running since 1920, was won by home player Tim Willson.

He overcame Wirral’s Tony Cavanagh in the semi-final, while John Jones (Bailey Hill) defeated Brian Whitlow (Hoole Park) in the other last- four encounter.

The final was watched by a large crowd in the evening sunshine and proved to be an enthralling encounter, with Willson emerging as a worthy winner.

Red Lion A stretched further ahead as Division One leaders of the Frodsham and District League.

Leading lights of their full- house defeat of Goshawk B were Barry Ellams (21-1) and Brian Griffiths (21-4).

With Norton Arms B open- dated, Helsby B went top of Division Two, albeit in defeat at Subscription B (John Smith 21-2).

Halton RBL A returned to the Division Three summit, shading their contest against War Memorial A, while Len Fagan’s 21-1 helped to secure the comprehensive home win over Kingsley B which restored Union Tavern to Division Four’s top spot.
