ANDY Rose beat all comers – including the weather – to lift the Pioneer Cup on Saturday.

The annual handicap bowls competition, sponsored by the Pioneer, attracted the cream of the town’s players to the Woodland Hotel Bowling Club.

Rose, 30, from Ellesmere Port, worked his way through the preliminary round, survived rounds one and two and saw off Mark Jones in the semi-final to set up a clash with Alan Leason on a bright day punctuated by torrential showers.

“The weather didn’t help matters,” said Ledsham Royal Bowling Club member Rose. “But the greens were playing with medium pace and it was easy to bowl on them.

“In the end it was not difficult to play well and win.”

Rose, who also plays for Kelsall BC, took up bowls aged just 10. In the final he beat Leason 21-16 to take the title with ease.
