MARTIAL ARTS: A MARTIAL arts club in Northwich is celebrating the success of two of its star pupils.

Tae Kwon-Do instructor Ruth Chare is ecstatic after two of her students gained their black belts in the Korean sport.

Ten-year old Jonathan Reilly and 14-year old Oliver Rothwell took their black belt grading at Bristol Academy last week, having spent most of the year in preparation.

Their success is a triple victory as they are the first students of two times world champion Ruth to reach that level.

Jonathan started Tae Kwon-Do at age six and is one of the youngest people to be granted a black belt.

He said: 'It was hard work learning everything I needed to know for the grading and I was relieved and very happy when I heard that I had passed. This has been my goal since I started training.'

Oliver's victory is an achievement in itself as the Northwich teenager suffers from respiratory condition cystic fibrosis.

Despite the added difficulty of overcoming the illness which often prevented him from training, brave Oliver was determined to gain his belt after being involved for four years.

He said: 'I practised at home in front of the video when I was not able to attend training sessions.

'I was overwhelmed with happiness when I heard that I had passed and delighted that I had finally reached the level of black belt. It has brought me health, happiness and fun.' Tae Kwon-Do classes take place every Monday from 6.30-7.30pm at Northwich Youth Centre, Winnington Lane. For more information ring Ruth on 01606 802339.
