MARTIAL ARTS: TOM O'Dwyer's karate career has peaked twice in as many months.

After gaining his black belt, the 14-year-old Runcornian has now claimed his first national title.

The shotokan exponent has been doing karate since he was seven years old and trains two evenings a week with the Sangaku Karate Group at the RNA Club in Halton Road.

He won the children's kumite title (5th kyu and above) for fighters over five feet in height at the National Competition in Preston. Tom was also a member of the men's Team Halton which finished second.

A pupil of St Chad's Catholic High School, he lives in Ashley Road.

Passing their black-belt gradings at the same time were sister and brother Katie Ward, 15, and 13-year-old Kevin Ward of Quarry Close, who are pupils at Grange Comprehensive School.
