THE most obvious stocking filler for the horse racing fan in South Cheshire this Christmas - apart from a large ante-post voucher for next year's Grand National - is Ginger McCain's biography.

Just published, Ginger McCain - My Colourful Life: From Red To Amber is an excellent read about the man and his horses.

Published in his final season as a trainer - Ginger held a permit as long ago as 1953 and took out a full licence in 1969 - its title explains how he became popularly associated with just one horse, the three times Grand National hero Red Rum, before Amberleigh House gave him his fourth victory in the race last year.

Ginger, from Cholmondeley, will almost certainly be represented at Aintree this weekend when the racecourse stages a two-day meeting.

Meanwhile, another Cheshire trainer Richard Ford, from Tarporley, has Aintree in his sights for stable star Forest Gunner. The horse won the Grand Sefton Chase last year, and the Becher Chase next month is the initial target this season.

Fifth in last season's Grand National under trainer's wife Carrie, the 11-year-old has won his other two races over the Grand National fences.

Jockey Peter Buchanan, unbeaten on the horse, is first choice, but his unavailability would lead to Graham Lee or Richard McGrath taking his place.

The trainer doesn't foresee another go at the Grand National next April. 'He didn't get the trip last time, and there's no reason why he'll get it next spring.'

The next racing at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse Food and Drink Festival is on Wednesday November 9 (racing starts at 12.40pm). For details call 01978 780323.
