GYMNASTICS: Beth Tweddle is in Turkey aiming to add a new medal to her collection.

The 20-year-old from Bunbury is competing at her first ever World University Games in Izmir.

One of only two British gymnasts to make it to Turkey, British champion Beth will today take part in qualifying as she looks to win a place in the all-round and events final.

Given her proven pedigree, qualifying is expected to be nothing more than a formality for the Commonwealth Games gold medal winner.

Beth's mum, Anne, says her daughter is ready to battle hard for medals when the main action begins this weekend.

'The standard will be very mixed,' said Anne. 'There will be some higher level gymnasts there. There are some Chinese gymnasts and a Brazilian who is very good. We haven't heard too much other than that but we expect her to make the finals.'

Beth, who has just completed the first year of a degree in sports science at Liverpool John Moores' University, qualified for the World University Games by winning the British University Sports Association (BUSA) Championships.
