HOCKEY: BEBINGTON Hockey Club, the leaders of the North League Division Two West, came close to their first defeat of the season at Sutton High School last Saturday when visitors Formby led 4-3 with only two minutes remaining.
Alex Bailey then seized on a rebound at a penalty corner to level the scores at 4-4 and snatch an important point.
Formby, disappointed at this late setback, had only themselves to blame because they led 2-0 at one stage before a spirited Bebington fightback earned them goals in quick suc-cession by Richie Little, John McMullen (penalty corner) and James Rafferty.
Bebington travel to Macclesfield next Saturday and hope to be at full strength for a game they should win. Bebington were 5-1 winners of the earlier game at Sutton.
Oxton were out-played by the powerful Sheffield Hallam side and went down 5-1 at Abbeyfield. Oxton experimented with a 4-2-4 formation and were over-run in midfield.
Neil Yates, superb in goal, and Paul Parry, quick and resourceful in defence, stood out for Oxton, but the youngsters in the side struggled against the powerful Sheffield forwards.
Oxton take on Wigan at Birkenhead School on Saturday (2pm) and are badly in need of points after three successive defeats.
In the Under 17 Northern Counties Tournament at Belle Vue, Wirral's youth side drew 4-4 in their semi-final against Lancashire but went out in the sudden death shoot-out after sharing the first barrage.
Cheshire, 1-0 winners over Yorkshire in the other semi-final, became North Champions by beating Lancashire 3-1. Cheshire now go on to the national stages of the competition.
