YOUNG players from Ellesmere Port and beyond will be relieved to know that this year’s Cheshire Jets Summer Basketball Camp will be going ahead – despite a change of venue.

The BBL Championship giants have been running a camp from Ellesmere Port Catholic High School for more than 25 years.

But as the school is undergoing building work there were fears the camp would have to be cancelled as organisers struggled to find a suitable replacement venue.

Whitby High School came to the rescue, however, by offering their sports facilities and their classrooms as dormitories as a new home for the camp, which this year will run from July 25-30.

Jets director Peter Hawkins said: “Without great support from Whitby High School there is no doubt that the camp would not be going ahead leaving hundreds of young basketball players disappointed.”

Whitby High School head teacher Margaret Hughes added: “We are pleased to be able to support the Cheshire Jets in continuing the tradition of hosting this international basketball event in Ellesmere Port.

“We as a school have served this community for the past 50 years and this event undoubtedly highlights the town and surrounding area while giving valuable opportunities for young people.

“We are pleased to be able to offer our extensive facilities to Cheshire Jets.”
