IT was a golden day for Chester when athletes from the city travelled to Macclesfield for the Cheshire Schools Championships.

Track and field starlets from across the Chester district competed against rivals from Ellesmere Port, South Cheshire, Mid Cheshire, Macclesfield, Warrington and Halton.

The leading finishers put themselves in the selection frame for this weekend’s Mason Trophy, the national inter-counties schools event in Birmingham.

In Macclesfield on Saturday, Michael Bailiff (Upton High) cleared 1.81m to win the inter boys high jump title, while Yousef Khalifa (Queen’s Park) won the inter boys long jump with 5.29m and Matthew Spencer (King’s School) hit 12.17m for victory in the inter boys shot.

Christleton High’s Cameron Clark launched the inter boys javelin to a winning mark of 47.19m, while Tom Kellett (Bishop Heber) powered his way to success with 27.02m in the inter boys hammer. Robbie Dagnall clocked a winning time of 51.1 seconds in the senior boys 400m.

Tom Booth (Upton) won the senior boys 400m hurdles in 59.4 seconds, while Alice Jennings (Chester Catholic High) posted 47.6 seconds for victory in the inter girls 300m hurdles.

Kelly Baker (Bishops’ High) triumphed in the inter girls shot with 11.04m, while Victoria Anderson (Queen’s School) clocked 15.9 seconds for a victory in the senior girls 100m hurdles and cleared a winning height of 1.66m in the high jump.

Amy Williams (Queen’s School) was victorious in the junior girls long jump with 5.25m and Abbey Gate College pupil Ross McCormick clocked a winning time of 12.3 seconds in the junior boys 80m hurdles.

Upton’s Tessa McCormick rounded the inter girls 1,500m in a time of 4:55.1 to take gold, Alex Hailes (Bishop Heber) finished second with 15.4 seconds in the inter boys 100m hurdles and Aidan Stoakley (Upton) posted 11.7 seconds for second place in the senior boys 100m.

Tarporley’s Amy Hinchly finished second with 4:56.7 in the junior girls 1,500m, while Sam Rimmer (Upton) rounded the senior boys 400m hurdles in second place with 65.3 seconds, and Ali Burkett finished second with 43.0 seconds in the inter girls 300m.

The podium places kept on coming.

While Lucy Earl (Bishop Heber) finished second in the inter girls discus with 21.22m, Danielle Erskine took the silver medal in the senior girls long jump with 5.03m.

Rachel Treloar (Christleton) clocked 13.1 seconds for second spot in the senior girls 100m and Lottie Fraser-Cox (5:48.8) and Gemma Mayled (6:32.3) finished second and third respectively in the senior girls 1,500m.

Zac Holland (Bishops’ High) was third in the junior boys 800m in 2:17.7, and Alex Kirk (Upton) cleared 1.55m for third spot in the junior boys high jump, while Mark Hearn (Christleton) spun the junior boys discus to third place with 26.97m.
