MATTHEW Pagan has sprinted to an inter-counties victory in Birmingham.

The West Cheshire AC member and Chester Catholic High student represented Cheshire Schools in the Mason Trophy event held at the Alexander Stadium.

Pagan clocked 49.80 seconds to win the intermediate boys 400m title in impressive fashion ahead of next month’s English Schools Track and Field Championships at Gateshead.

Also grabbing gold for Cheshire was Tarporley High School’s Amy Hinchly, who rounded the intermediate girls 800m in a winning time of two minutes and 16.1 seconds.

Emily Ball, of West Cheshire AC, represented Shropshire in the intermediate girls discus and finished second with a throw of 34.21m.

Zac Barnsley posted 11.5 in the intermediate boys 100m while his sister Alice clocked 13.8 in the junior girls 100m.

Georgia Barlow posted 27.2 in the junior girls 200m with Christy Mageean completing the junior boys 300m in 41.00.

Mark Davies was first home for West Cheshire AC at the Sport in the Port 10k Road Race, clocking 37 minutes and 12 seconds for 17th.

He was joined by club colleagues Robert Freeman (37th in 39:04), Robert Little (40th in 39:21), Stephen Cunningham (47th in 40:03), Steve Hillier (61st in 41:23), Alec Jervis (75th in 42:06), Neil Carter (108th in 43:47), Dave Hough (160th in 45:44), Helen Johnson (184th in 47:00), Stephen Howarth (427th in 56:45) and Andrew Home (487th in 59:11).

Davies went into the race on the back of a 15th-placed finish in the opening round of the Deestriders Off Road Grand Prix Series at Shotton.

He came home in 29:49 and was followed by Cunningham (20th in 30:26), Jim Jones (43rd in 35:25), Tony Kennedy (45th in 35:42) and Mark Povey (52nd in 37:57).

Chester Triathlon Club members competed at the Sport in The Port Road 10k Road Race.

Susan Fourie and Steven Walker (both second), Gill Clingham (third), Christina Roach (fourth) and Mike Waring (fifth) powered to top-five finishes in their category.

In the shorter 5k event, James Hadley was eighth overall and first in his category, followed by Julian Evitts in 12th.

Tattenhall Runners members are fresh back from impressing at the Welsh Castles Relay.

The two-day, 20-stage road running event from Caernarfon to Cardiff Castle attracted an international field. Tattenhall, therefore, were delighted to finish 47th out of the 61 teams taking part.

All of their runners performed extremely well in tough, mountainous and hot conditions.

Elizabeth Renondeau had an outstanding run, finishing second lady on stage 11, a 12.3-mile stretch from Newtown to Llanbadarn Fynydd.

Andrew Sudlow maintained his excellent form, passing the post in 13th on stage five from Barmouth to Harlech, while Amanda Davies was the third lady on stage two from Penygroes to Criccieth after a great display.

Rob Webster brought the Tattenhall team home, running the glory stage into Cardiff Castle.

Seven club members then took part in the Trail up the Beast fell race in Maeshafn.

Rob Arden led the way, finishing 20th in 42 minutes and 32 seconds.

He was followed by Mark Smith in 23rd (44:32) and the impressive Martin Hilton in 39th (46:56).

Next up was Webster in 53rd (49:53), showing little sign of tiredness from the Welsh Castles Relay.

Kathy Frankland took two minutes off her personal best time to finish 72nd (53:24), with Sharon Basford 85th (63:54) and Laura Ashford 87th (66:35).

Helsby Running Club was also represented at the Trail up the Beast.

Chris Baynham-Hughes was first in for Helsby in ninth (37:41) after a closely fought battle with Jim O’Hara (38:24) in 11th.

Jayne Joy was first lady home and 14th overall (40:07), smashing the women’s course record by more than a minute.

Following up were Adair Broughton in 18th (41:50), Colin Thompson in 27th (44:53), Steve Riley in 29th (45:00), Ian Landucci in 30th (45:09), Vanessa Griffiths in 49th (48:28), Janet Robertson in 50th (48:32), Paul Foster in 57th (50:25), Rachel Arnold in 58th (50:40), Tom de Jong in 77th (54:15) and Nesta Hawker in 80th (57:19).

Robertson (29th in 22:36) and Ben Williams (39th in 23:17) then set course PBs when competing at Saturday’s Delamere Park Run.

Riley (22nd in 22:06) spearheaded a Helsby pack also containing Helen Tudor (51st in 24:12) and Alison Meakin (25:54).

On the same day Andy Robinson completed the Welsh Vegan 3,000s Ultra – a race covering more than 31 miles and 13,000ft – in a time of 11 hours and 14 minutes for 11th position.

The following day Roy Gaskill was 58th (41:01) and Clare-Louise Miller 215th (48:01) at the Sport in the Port 10k Road Race, and Dave Feakes 214th (1.57:49) and Les ley Feakes 238th (2.00:36) at the Cross Bay Challenge.
