AMY Williams has started 2013 in fine style, winning double gold at the Northern Indoor Championships.

The 15-year-old from Chester claimed both the under 17s long jump and triple jump crowns at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield.

Amy, a member of Sale Harriers, began by winning the triple jump in the morning session. She led the field from the start and broke the championship record with her sixth and final jump, an effort of 11.95m which put her into the all-time UK top 20 for her age group.

She has another two years of competition at U17 level and is only 29cm from the British record.

Queen’s School girl Amy, of Dee Banks, went on to complete a gold medal double by winning the U17 long jump in the afternoon with a 5.55m leap.

West Cheshire AC athlete Kelly Baker also struck gold in Sheffield.

The 16-year-old, who lives in Little Sutton and attends Bishops’ High School in Chester, hit a winning put of 11.68m to claim her gold medal.

Club-mate Olivia Montez-Brown finished fourth in the U20 women’s long jump with 5.27m, and Danielle Erskine was sixth with 5.14m.

Chris Goodwin represented West Cheshire AC in the U20 men’s 800m final and clocked two minutes 5.51 seconds for fourth spot.

Zac Barnsley posted a new U17 men’s 60m personal best of 7.34 seconds in a heat before finishing seventh in the final with 7.38 seconds. He also competed in the 200m and posted a new personal best of 23.88 seconds.

His sister, Alice, finished third in her heat of the U15 girls 60m with 8.59 seconds, and then posted 8.62 for seventh place in her semi-final.

Matthew Pagan won his U17 men’s 400m heat with a time of 53.74 seconds, but was then disqualified in the semi final because he stepped out of his lane.

Christian Okeke achieved sixth position in his men’s 60m heat with a time of 7.67 seconds.

Queen’s School student Georgina Alexander finished equal third in the U15 long jump with 4.87m. Unfortunately for Georgina, she missed out on the bronze medal on a countback.

Georgina, who was the only girl at the championships not to be affiliated to an athletics club, also finished fifth in the U15 girls 60m final.
