CHESTER athletes triumphed in a county competition at Crewe.

The Cheshire Minors Track and Field Championships took place at Cumberland Arena last Wednesday.

Six athletes from the Chester team struck gold.

In the boys event, Phil Hopkins won the 100m in 13 seconds while fellow Christleton High student Jasper McLaughlin raced to success in the 200m in 27.2s.

Ryan Horuz of Bishops’ High won the 1,500m in five minutes and 7.9 seconds.

Three Chester schoolgirls came away with gold medals.

Maisie Tipping of The Queen’s School won the hurdles in 12s, Tarporley High’s Issy Clarke won the 1,500m in 5:14.4 and Emma Howe, also of Tarporley, finished first in the javelin thanks to a 26.12m throw.

Local schools are represented in the Cheshire team for the English Schools Track and Field Championships at Gateshead on July 5/6.

Those listed in the 35-strong squad include: Matthew Pagan (Chester Catholic High); Kelly Baker (Bishops’ High), Amy Hinchly (Tarporley High), Amy Williams (The Queen’s School), Tessa McCormick (Upton High), Matthew Sheen (Christleton High), Jess Parons (Helsby High) and Jenni Potter (Neston High).
