RECORDS tumbled when Chester’s annual schools athletics competition got under way.

The Chester & District Schools Track and Field Championships, staged last Tuesday at Deeside Stadium in Connah’s Quay, saw hundreds of pupils go for gold in damp conditions.

Five championship records were broken on the day.

Christy Mageean (Christleton) set a new Year 8 boys 300m record (40.8), while Bradley Jackson (Christleton) clocked a new best of 41.72 in the Y9 boys 300m.

Matt Willis of The King’s School was a record breaker in the Y8 boys 1,500m, clocking four minutes and 36 seconds.

Other records were claimed by Matthew Pagan of Catholic High in the inter boys 400m (51.32) and Matthew Sheen of Tarorley High in the inter boys 1,500m (4.20.0).

The Queen’s School won the Y8 girls’ team title, with Christleton coming out on top in the Y8 boys event.

Abbey Gate College (girls) and Bishop Heber (boys) claimed the Y9 titles, with Tarporley High doing the double in the intermediate category.
