WEST Cheshire AC threw its doors open to the public on Saturday as part of the countdown celebrations to next year’s London Olympics.

The club, which draws in members from Chester and Ellesmere Port, organised a ‘Come and Try Day’ at their Stanney Oaks track.

The special event tied in with others across the UK to mark one year until the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games begin in London.

Many local youngsters took an opportunity to take part in the free-of-charge event, which featured running, hurdling, jumping and throwing sessions.

Club chairman Dennis Wall said: “The day proved a success in terms of helping to spread the word about athletics and publicise the existence of West Cheshire AC and our fabulous facilities at Stanney.

“It has provided plenty of people at West Cheshire AC with food for thought about now making the Come and Try Day an annual event.”

Entries are now being accepted for the Shell Sutton Six 10k being held at Guilden Sutton on Sunday, September 18 (11am start). Forms can be downloaded at: www.westcheshireac.co.uk.

Fixtures this weekend include the Northern Inter- Counties Track and Field Championships on Sunday at Leigh, and the Cheshire Track and Field League third round on Sunday to be hosted by East Cheshire Harriers at Ashton under Lyne (1pm start).
