WEST CHESHIRE AC attracted more than 100 people to their ‘Come and Try Athletics’ day at the Stanney Oaks track.

Officials at the club were delighted by the response from the public who were keen to experience athletics on the back of Team GB’s success at the Olympic Games.

Participants at Saturday’s event also enjoyed watching the Paralympic Torch Relay pass just outside the Stanney Oaks Leisure Centre gates, which added to the occasion.

West Cheshire AC secretary Dan Gilroy, who coached throwing events during the session, said: “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.

“It was good to see people giving athletics a try after their appetite had been whetted by the London Olympics.

“We are now hoping the fixture becomes an annual event.”

Those who attended were given an opportunity to try sprints, hurdles, jumps, and throws, which were supervised by fully qualified UK Athletics-registered coaches and an enthusiastic group of parents and West Cheshire AC members.

The free-of-charge fixture was part of the BBC website initiative entitled Things To Do, and also incorporated the England Athletics Community Fun Day initiative.

Mr Gilroy added: “I’d like to convey thanks on behalf of the club to those volunteers who turned up and made the event such a success.

"West Cheshire AC are now hoping the session will encourage not just athletes to take part in future club events, but parents, grandparents, and ex-athletes who would like to become qualified coaches and or qualified officials.”

Anyone interested in getting involved at West Cheshire AC can just turn up on a Tuesday or Wednesday training session, between 6.30pm and 8pm, or on a Saturday between 10am and noon.

West Cheshire AC are ccepting entries for the popular Guilden Sutton 10k road race being held on Sunday, September 16. Further details and online race entry details can be found by logging on to:www.wcacrr.co.uk.
