ENTRIES are now open for the Christleton 5k, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year.

The run will take place on Friday, May 18 (7.15pm start) and will be based at Christleton Sports Centre.

In previous years, the event has been organised by Tattenhall Runners but it is now in the hands of Chester Triathlon Club.

The fast course is popular with local runners for its ‘pb’ potential and highly competitive field, and more than 70 local runners have already reserved their place for this year.

Race director Chris Morgan said: “The Christleton 5k has a long history in the local running calendar, as well as being a highly respected race, attracting quality runners from further afield.

“It is important that it continues and I feel very proud to be involved in keeping this event alive.”

The consistent quality of the Christleton 5k field is shown by the small reductions in the course records over recent years.

Bashir Hussain’s time of 14 minutes and 13 seconds was only marginally reduced by Liverpool Harriers’ ace Johnny Mellor in 2011, when he took a second off his own previous course record to finish in 14:06.

In the women’s race, 2011 saw Elle Baker of Stockport Harriers equalling the women’s record of 16:10.

There was success for Halton and Frodsham Harriers at the Northern Cross Country Championships.

Georgia Aston Massey recorded a highly-creditable top-20 finish at the Pontefract race, taking 19th place in the under 13 girls 3.1k race. Her time was 12:47.

Jenney Pyatt was 121st in 15:10 and Kelsey Grady finished 162nd in 16:35. In the U13 boys (3.1k) race, Frodsham’s Christopher Larkin finished 47th in 12:24.

Christopher and Georgia also picked up awards for turning in the best performances by any male and female club member competing in the recent County Cross Country Championships.

Georgia won gold in the under 13 girls and Christopher was placed eighth in the U13 boys.
