TWO Chester school students have been crowned English champions.

Amy Williams and Matthew Pagan were victorious at the England Athletics Under 15s/U17s Championships in Bedford over the weekend.

Amy, who attends The Queen’s School, rounded off her incredible and unbeaten U15s girls long jump season by winning gold in 5.76m.

Matthew, a pupil at Catholic High, posted a 35.74 seconds personal best to win the U15s boys 300m title.

He was joined on the medal podium by his West Cheshire AC clubmate Emily Ball, who bagged U15s girls shot bronze with a 11.51m personal best.

West Cheshire AC finished fourth at the Northern Track and Field League Division Two promotion match in Leigh on Saturday.

Dave McKay and Richard Stocker enjoyed a hat-trick of victories from the throwing circle. In the A class McKay hit 12.12m in the shot, 43.58m in the hammer and 34.15m in the discus, with Stocker powering to 11.59m, 33.34m and 36.73m in the same three events in the B class. McKay also won the javelin with a throw of 54.75m.

Mike Lyness was the winner of the B javelin with 45.42m.

Danielle Erskine (18.4 seconds) and Jenni Potter (19.0 seconds) led the way for the Wests women by teaming up for 100m hurdles success.

Javelin wins went the way of Sophie Percival (29.28m) and Nicola Gore (22.31), who also won the discus with 29.66m.

Rob Tudor was first home for West Cheshire AC at the Birchwood 10k.

He claimed third position in the over 45s age group and 27th position overall in a time of 35 minutes.

Stephen Hillier (194th in 43:34), Mark Davies (203rd in 43:50), Mark Povey (371st in 48:55), Julie Wood (455th in 51:04) and Brian Beattie (462nd in 51:15) followed up.

West Cheshire AC is staging a free ‘Come and Try Athletics Session’ at its Stanney Oaks track in Ellesmere Port this Saturday, between 10am and noon, for anyone aged nine and above.

Those interested in taking part are asked to arrive no later than 10am because the Paralympic Torch Relay is scheduled to pass the Stanney Oaks Leisure Centre entrance at 10.30am.
