FENCING: CHRISTLETON High School student Anna Gover has capped a successful season with selection for the Welsh youth international fencing team.

Following wins at the Cheshire and Lancashire schools championships, and the national Leon Paul Junior Foil competition at Ashton, she secured 14th place in this year's British Youth Championships.

This, together with good performances at the Wrexham, Merseyside and Welsh Open competitions, which pushed her British senior ranking up from 160 to 126, secured her place in the Welsh under-18 team for the four-way match against England, Scotland and Northern Ireland at Stoke in January.

Her performance helped Wales secure third place with a loss to England (the eventual winners), a narrow defeat by Scotland and a convincing win against Northern Ireland.

Once her AS-levels are over, Anna will be back in training for next season's programme of open competitions, to improve her senior national ranking and maintain her place in the Welsh squad.

Anna, who has been fencing for only three years, trains with the Saltney Sword Club which meets at St David's Sports Centre in Saltney, and at the North Wales centre of regional excellence.
